Riverside Middle School Student-Athlete

A student-athlete is one who excels in the classroom and works hard to show the same excellence in athletic endeavors.

Riverside Middle School encourages participation in extra-curricular activities. Interscholastic sports are a major part of the extra-curricular package at our school.

I. Eligibility

        The Springfield Athletic Department recognizes and promotes the priority of academics within our interscholastic athletic program. While athletics is an important part of education, academic success remains the primary objective. All coaches support this position and will make every effort to accommodate students’ needs as they balance academics with athletics. It is essential that all student-athletes and parents understand the following academic eligibility regulations.

                A. All students who attend Riverside Middle School are eligible to participate in interscholastic sports.
                B. The student is responsible for all missed work.
                C. The school reserves the right to determine the eligibility of a student concerning disciplinary action.

II. Attendance
                A. Attendance at practice and games/meets is required.
                B. Failure to attend practice for three (3) unexcused absences may lead to dismissal from the team.
                C. Participants will give the coach advance notice of any prior commitments before the season begins.
                D. All students must be in school by 9:30 am if they are going to participate in a sports event that day.
                E. When scheduled for PE class, as student is required to participate in class on class on the day of a contest or practice. Failure to participate will result in a student being ineligible to participate in after school sports for that day.
 

III. Dress and Appearance Code

        The Riverside student-athlete is expected to adhere to the following dress and appearance code:

                A. Hair style will be the individual’s choice, but must not impede the performance or be deemed a safety hazard.
B. Athletes representing Riverside Middle School at athletic contests will dress appropriately—according to the RMS Dress Code as stated in the RMS Community Handbook.

IV. Injuries

All injuries occurring while participating in athletics must be reported to the coach. Athletes who are treated by a physician must obtain written permission from the physician in order to return to the activity.

V. Uniforms and Equipment

A. Uniforms should be cleaned after every contest.
B. Uniforms or equipment lost or damaged by a participant must be replaced by the student. Equipment will be paid for at the replacement cost before a new uniform is issued.
C. Uniforms and equipment will be turned in at least five (5) days after the last competition. After this time, names will be turned into administration. Participants who fail to hand in equipment or uniforms will not receive post-season awards.

VI. Sportsmanship

A. Students shall display good sportsmanship at all times.
B. Any display of unsportsmanlike conduct will result in a suspension for one contest. A second act of unsportsmanlike conduct will result in dismissal from the team.

VII. Harassment and Hazing

Any act of harassment, including but not limited to verbal or physical threats, as made by any member(s) of the school community, is strictly forbidden. Offenders are subject to penalties as stipulated by school district policy, state and federal laws. Hazing is a form of harassment and will not be tolerated during school, or at any school function.

VIII. Transportation

A. All students will be required to ride the bus on a round-trip basis to athletic contests.
B. Parents wishing to transport athletes home from contests in a unique situation must give the coach a note at least 24 hours prior to the event.
C. Team members must respect the job of the bus driver. They must talk in a natural voice and stay seated at all times.

IX. Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco

A. The use of illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco is strictly forbidden by the student-athlete at Riverside Middle School.
B. The use of illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco by an athlete will be handled as outlined in the district policy concerning these matters.

X. Dismissal or Suspension

A. Coaches have the authority to suspend a student from his/her team due to violations of team rules that the coach has established. The coach must notify administration of any suspension.
B. Dismissal from a team may happen as a result of breaking the rules established in this handbook.
C. Coaches will notify parents when a player is dismissed from the team.

XI. Quitting

A. Any student dropping out of a sport has an obligation to meet with the coach involved and must have parental permission.
B. Any student leaving a sport must hand in all uniforms and equipment that they have been issued within five days.

XII. Participation Conflicts

Students involved in an athletic team should understand that there is a definite commitment to the team as outlined in the Attendance Policy. Coaches should be notified of all conflicts prior to the start of the season. Every effort should be made to attend each athletic event that the athlete has committed to.

A student is considered an athlete AT ALL TIMES between the first practice and the last competition.
